School Walk for Diabetes

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Bayshore Middle School is participating for the second year in the American Diabetes Association’s School Walk for Diabetes, an educational school fund-raiser that supports programs aimed at curing and preventing diabetes, and improving the lives of all those affected by diabetes.

Today more than 20.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.  Diabetes is a condition where the body either does not make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it does make.  The two most common types of diabetes are:

·         Type 1 diabetes – when the body destroys its own insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

·         Type 2 diabetes – when the body is either not making enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it does make.  Eating healthy foods and regularly exercising can help prevent type 2 diabetes.

In our school we have four students afflicted with Type I diabetes.  These students are challenged daily with the management of this serious disease.  Please join them along with two of our teachers in our fight against this disease.

At the end of School Walk for Diabetes, students will receive rewards such as sporting equipment and outdoor gear.  Schools raising $1,000 or more earn a gift certificate to purchase needed physical education equipment or school medical supplies.  Last year our school raised over $10,000 for this worth cause.  We would like to match if not exceed our total from last year.

Please take a few moments to review the materials your child brings home.  Talk together about the benefits of eating well and exercising, and help your child make healthy choices.  Tell your child about those people in your family or circle of friends who have diabetes.  Encourage your child to walk in their honor.  Finally, please be sure to complete the permission form allowing your child to participate in this worthwhile program.  These are to be returned on November 5th.  Do not let your student go door to door to ask for pledges.  Please convert all cash to checks made out to the American Diabetes Association.  Online pledges can be made by going to www.diabetes.org/schoolwalk select Bayshore Middle School and set up your personal webpage.

Permission and Sponsor Forms will be collected on November 5th.  If your child will be on vacation it may be turned in on Friday, November 2nd.  Our walk will take place on November 7h during your child’s physical education, health, or computer classes.

Thank you for supporting School Walk for Diabetes.   The lessons learned about helping others will last a lifetime. To learn more about diabetes or School Walk for Diabetes, please visit www.diabetes.org or call 1-800-DIABETES (342-2383).

Sincerely,

Mrs. Siegel, Mrs. Wiltbank, Ms. Capraun, Mrs. Strobel, and our school nurse Mrs. Taylor R.N.
