MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP BOARD OF EDUCATION

TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 21, 2005

 

Time and Place    Pursuant to notices sent to each member of the Board of Education, the regular meeting

of Meeting           was held on Tuesday evening, June 21, 2005 in the High School North Library,

63 Tindall Road, Middletown, New Jersey. 

 

Call to Order        At 7:45 p.m., the meeting was called to order. 

 

1.                  SUNSHINE NOTICE:

“Adequate notice of this meeting was provided by sending such notice to the Asbury Park Press, the

Independent, the Courier, and the Two River Times and the posting of such notice at the August T.

                Miner Administration Building and each elementary, middle, and secondary school in the district.”

Present:                  Laura Agin, Leonora Caminiti, Dawn Diorio, Sherry Gevarter, Joan Minnuies, Kevin Ryan, Carolyn S. Self, Rose Stallmeyer and Patricia Walsh.

Absent:                  No absentees.

Also Present:                                David L. Witmer, William J. Doering, Jane Austin, Christopher Halpin, Karen Bilbao and Malachi J. Kenney, Esq.

6.                OPEN TO PUBLIC – COMMENTS ON AGENDA ITEMS ONLY

H.S. North students spoke on the Board’s policy for hiring coaches.

                                Tiffany Kenny, Maureen Pizzeci and Jane Veth discussed the hiring of coaches.

                                H.S. South students spoke on the suspension of several students.

                                Ilene Wilde spoke on the suspension of H.S. South students.

 

                                Dr. Witmer discussed the H.S. South suspensions that were the result of a food fight in the cafeteria.  Dr. Witmer

stated that he totally supported the Principal’s decision in not allowing the seniors to “walk” at graduation.

                                Mr. Kenney stated that there is no requirement for the Board to suspend the suspensions pending any appeals.

A.      Report of the President

 

1)          Acknowledgement of Service/Retirements 2004/2005 – (see following page).

 

 

 

 

2)          Consider Modifications to the 2005/06 School Calendar.

 

Mrs. Minnuies stated that five days will be deleted from next year’s school calendar:  Columbus Day, Rosh

Hashanah, Friday of Presidents’ Day Weekend, and Monday and Tuesday of Spring break.

Mrs. Caminiti reported on scheduling of sports teams.  She noted that a schedule can not be released today as the

Shore Conference meeting will not be held until July 20th.  Mrs. Caminiti stated the schedules should be available

at the Board meeting on July 26th.

 

B.  Business Administrator/Board Secretary

                                               

1.        Motion to accept the reports of the Treasurer and Secretary as being in agreement for the month of May, 2005.

          Motion made by Mrs. Walsh, seconded by Mrs. Gevarter, for approval of Curriculum Items 1, 2, 3 & 4.  Mrs. Stallmeyer, Chair of the Curriculum Committee, stated that a majority of the Committee supports the recommendations for curriculum guides and textbooks.  Mrs. Diorio stated she will be voting no on #A1 Science due to the process used to analyze and select the science curriculum and textbook.  Motion carried on roll call vote:

                      Mrs. Gevarter requested that the RFP process for food service begin in January or February so that timely comparisons

and decisions can be made well in advance.  Mrs. Stallmeyer requested that elementary food service be looked at in the upcoming year in order to make improvements.

10.                BOARD COMMITTEE REPORTS

                Mrs. Gevarter (Personnel Committee) stated that the committee will be reviewing the policy for hiring coaches and

will make a recommendation to the Board.  She also noted that the committee is now reviewing the new job descriptions for the new job titles in central office and would like any comments Board Members may have.   Mrs.

Agin stated that the Policy Committee has agreed to move forward with the review of the revised policy and should

 

 

be completed by March of 2006.  Mrs. Diorio (Facilities Committee) noted that the bid for the H.S. North athletic

field will be voted on at the June 30th special voting meeting.  Mrs. Minnuies (Pupil Services Committee) stated that

the committee discussed summer school, noting that everything is now set.  

 

11.                   OLD BUSINESS

                Mrs. Caminiti asked if the question of foreign exchange students has been addressed.  Mrs. Agin noted that there is

no limit in accepting host students and that Mr. Halpin and Dr. Skolnik are working on procedures for that item.  Mrs. Agin stated that one student has already been accepted.  She also noted that there is no policy for hosting students on a long-term basis and that will be addressed in the future.  Mr. Halpin noted that there will always be a limit as to the number of host or foreign exchange students in each school at one time. 

 

12.                NEW BUSINESS

                Mrs. Minnuies requested from Dr. Witmer a list of meetings held between administrators and the public so that a

                Board liaison can be appointed.

                                Mrs. Minnuies stated that the Board as a whole does not recognize tonight as an appeal for the H.S. South

                                suspensions, but does strongly support the Superintendent, Principal and Administrators at H.S. South on their

                                decision.  Mr. Kenney stated that the Board does not formally have an appeal before it, however, if anyone wants

                                to pursue an appeal to a forum beyond the school district, the Board will make no procedural objection.

 

                                Ray McLaughlin discussed coaches and the hiring procedure.

                                Joe Coccurello and Nick Rubino apologized for their actions that resulted in suspension.
