Great News Everyone! Fairview has a NEW at-home Reading Program. We’re saying, "Goodbye" to RIF and "Hello" to The Million Minute Reading Challenge. Starting October 1, 2009, the Fairview community is being challenged to read a total of ONE MILLION minutes by June 1, 2010. Individual students are challenged to read 3200 minutes each by June 1st. Once again, the purpose of this program is to promote at-home reading during the school year as well as teamwork. This challenge may seem huge, but IF WE WORK TOGETHER, READING A LITTLE EACH DAY, WE CAN DO IT! Plus, the benefits include developing better reading skills and establishing a reading habit that will last a lifetime. Author, Jim Trelease says it best. "The more you READ, the better you get at it, the better you get at it, the more you like it, and the more you like it, the more you do it." PLUS "The more you READ, the more you know, and the more you know, the smarter you grow." Here’s how it works! Each month students will receive a log to record the date, the number of minutes they read, the TOTAL minutes they read for the month and a signature of a parent/guardian. Logs are turned in at the end of each month, on a specific due date, ***** Reading Logs MUST have the TOTAL minutes read for the month and a Parent’s Signature to be accepted. Fun incentives and prizes will be awarded along the way. There are many ways to read 3200 minutes at home between now and June 1 st. Students may read silently or orally. Parents may also read to their child. Students and parents can take turns reading. Students can read orally to their brothers or sisters. Plus, be on the look out to receive *Bonus Minutes at various school events.Research indicates that children of all ages need to read and hear good literature read aloud daily. Reading to your child provides an emotional bond, which will be remembered for a lifetime. Reading not only informs and explains, it also entertains. Furthermore, by tracking the minutes spent reading, children will see that we all believe in the importance of reading, and that reading at home positively affects their learning. The Million Minute Reading Challenge will end on June 1 st. Students can read on any day, for any amount of time, but they should plan ahead. Reaching 3200 minutes takes time, commitment and PLANNING! If a student reads every school night they will only have to read about 20 minutes each day. Remember,IF WE WORK TOGETHER & READ A LITTLE EACH DAY, WE CAN DO IT ! So, BRING IT ON! Let the Million Minute Reading Challenge BEGIN!
