Read Across America

Since its inception, Navesink School has
participated enthusiastically in
Read
Across America, a nation-wide activity
designed to foster a love of reading. More
generally recognized by Navesink students as
"Dr. Seuss Day," the school has a daylong
celebration. Much of the day is dedicated to
reading books. Although Dr. Seuss is a
constant, other favorites include the works
of Robert Munsch and Patricia Polacco. The
children often bring in blankets and pillows
to enhance the cozy atmosphere induced by
social reading. Guest readers are part of
the day's activities. The day is used to
foster the yearlong dedication to reading
which is evidenced by other school
activities such as "READ*WRITE*NOW!" and
"The Bayshore Reads."
The climax of the day's festivities is a
grand evening READ IN. Parents and others
(many dressed in sleepwear) are guest
readers. Mr. Halpin reads stories to the
whole audience and the children go into
age-level groups to enjoy books. Middle and
high school students revisit Navesink to
read with the younger children. Big Joe
Henry, the wonderful disc jockey from New
Jersey 101.5, reads in the classrooms and
closes the evening with a reading to the
whole group. Cakes in the form of the Cat in
the Hat and drinks are provided the
children.
This year, March 2nd falls on Saturday.
Therefore, the school will participate in
READ ACROSS AMERICA on Monday, March 4th.
Much of the Nation is celebrating on Friday,
March 1st; however, we want to make sure
that Big Joe has the opportunity to be with
us - he hasn't missed one year!
Keep your eyes open for announcements and
invitations to participate. We will have
fun!
