School Profile
New Monmouth School is a learning
community of nearly 500 Pre-K through Grade 5 students. Our school
population is enhanced by the presence of many classes for students with a
variety of special needs. All students are recognized as individuals
with unique talents and challenges. It is our mission to provide
each child with the means to learn, play, grow, and contribute as citizens
of the school, the community, and the world. The dedicated staff of
over 120 teachers, special therapists, paraprofessionals, and support
personnel is committed to on-going professional development in support of
our academic goals, programs, and services for students.
The new Mathematics curriculum is now in place for
grades K-5, and Reading/Language Arts has been implemented for grades 1-5.
These programs are aligned to state and federal standards, and provide
instruction to our students in the same manner as they will be assessed on
the NJ-ASK in grades 3 and 4. Preliminary data from our recently
adopted programs indicates increased student interest and achievement in
problem-solving and higher-level thinking skills. Social Studies and
Science classes provide opportunities for students to learn about their
world and apply writing skills across the curriculum. Integration of
technology into teaching and learning has increased with the addition of a
mobile laptop computer lab. Special area classes such as Art, Music,
Physical Education, Health, Spanish, Media, and Technology broaden student
experiences.
Special services and programs include Speech and Basic
Skills instruction, as well as Gifted & Talented and Enrichment
classes, Chorus, and Band. In addition, Grade 5 students gain a
sense of responsibility with their participation in the Safety Patrol,
School Store, daily news broadcasts over WNMS-TV, and participation in the
D.A.R.E. program. School-wide activities such as Celebrity Readers,
Read Across America, Science Share, and the Spelling Bee, enhance the
curriculum. An understanding of community service is fostered
through our Harvest of Giving and Hat & Mitten drives, collections for
the Red Cross Disaster Fund, and the “Helping Hands, Kind Hearts”
project.
Our active Parent Teacher Association provides
financial support as well as fun activities for our students. Many
volunteer committees provide services such as Pre-Kindergarten
Orientation, Library Circulation, Fun Day, Memory Book, Book Fair, Holiday
Craft, Variety Show, Fund-raising, Cultural Events, Academic Enrichment,
and field trips. The home/school connection is fundamental to the
success of our students. Parents are always encouraged to keep in touch
and become involved.
New Monmouth Elementary is a place where children
explore, learn, and grow with the combined support of faculty and
families. It’s a whale of a school!
