SUMMER SCHEDULE
- The Main Office will be closed from Monday, June 28 to
Wednesday,
August
18,
when secretaries
return. The district Extended School Year program for special needs
students will be
housed
at New Monmouth for 6 weeks this summer, so any items that need to
be dropped off may be left
for
Miss Donna or Miss Sue.
As of this writing, the name of the new Principal has not yet been
announced. A notification letter will be sent to parents as soon as
that information is known. Please refer
to the school & district web sites for updates on all topics of
interest throughout the year.
SUMMER READING
- Summer reading lists are now available on the
district website's
resource center,
at the Middletown Public Library and at Barnes&Noble
in Holmdel. It isimportant that summer reading be
at a student's independent reading
level, so that they can truly enjoy the
reading experience and
understand
what they have read without hesitation or frustration. If they should
be
interested in a title that is
beyond their
current ability,
consider using that book as
a read-aloud with
your
child. We do ask that students avoid books
that are among the core novels for
other grades, however,
they
may enjoy other books in a popular
series or
by a favorite author.
ELECTRONIC SAFETY
- An area of
concern recently is the use of cell phones, text messages, instant
messages, and social networking sites such as Facebook by our
elementary
students. Oftentimes, students
have access to this technology before they have the maturity and
knowledge to use it responsibly.
Students
may try to circumvent parental guidelines and controls by using
devices or accounts belonging to
friends & older
siblings,
or using computers at
the public library.
The sense of online "anonymity" may lead to students disclosing too
much personal information, sharing
photos (or appearing online in photos posted by others without their
knowledge), or making inappropriate
comments
to
I about
others. Summer is a good time to discuss these matters, especially
with older
students.
Students are often more savvy about new technology than we are. Did
you know that Facebook
accounts
are restricted to people over age 14? Have you ever
"Googled"
your child's name to see if any
information is
available about them online? For your reference, I have included a
few web sites for your
perusal
below that may help you learn about these topics for children of any
age. Be advised that while
the
safekids.com
site has a lot of good, free information on many topics, the
inclusion of their site here
does
not in any way endorse any products or services offered by their
sponsor.

To
clarify, bringing cell phones to school is discouraged and the
school does not assume any
responsibility
for breakage,
loss,
etc. If a cell
phone is brought to school (i.e. for walker
safety),
it must
be kept in the backpack, and turned off during all school hours.
Phones that are used or turned on during
school hours will be confiscated per district policy
and returned to the parent. "Emergencies" should be
reported
to the teacher, lunch aide,
or nurse who will arrange parental contact.
Enjoy
the first days of summer weather!
