Department Notes:

The vast majority of computer use today does not require the user to have extensive computer programming skills, but rather requires the operator to be a knowledgeable computer user.  Courses such as Accounting, Microsoft Word, and Computer Applications all provide students with computer instruction which will make them competent users.

An articulation program with Brookdale Community College has been initiated.  Select business courses can be taken for college credit.  Upon successful completion of the course and an examination administered by Brookdale Community College, credit will be granted when the student matriculates at the college and  completes twelve credits.

    Microsoft Word  ...…Grades 9 - 12

This full-year course introduces students to word processing using Microsoft Word.  This course is designed for students with beginner level computer skills.  Through practical, hand-on computer projects, students will begin producing basic documents and progress to using the more advanced formatting features of MS Word to create forms, letterhead and tables.  In addition to learning the format of academic reports using MLA style, students will create advertisements, flyers, certificates, newsletters and other publications.  Skills developed in this course will enable the student to create effective word processing documents required in school and the workplace.

  Accounting I ….Grades 10-12

This fundamental accounting course provides students with instruction in basic accounting procedures.  Real world experience will be provided through the use of business simulations and business software.  The accounting for the sole proprietorship and the partnership will be emphasized.  Students who are planning to major in business administration or accounting in college will benefit from this course.  Accounting software and Excel will be integrated throughout the course.
Prerequisite:     Algebra I

  Accounting II….Grades 11-12

This advanced course expands on the accounting theory and principles introduced in Accounting I.  Corporate accounting practices will be emphasized in this course.  Accounting theory will be reinforced through the use of simulations that provide real-world experience in the use of business forms.  This course also provides related computer skills to prepare students for future employment.  Students who are planning to major in business administration or accounting in college will benefit from this course.

  College Preparatory Accounting …..Grades 11-12

College Preparatory Accounting is designed for students who intend to pursue a career in accounting or any related business field.  Instruction is fast paced and covers the accounting theory and practices provided in Accounting I and Accounting II.  A college level textbook is used, as well as business simulations.  Accounting and business software provide students with real-world computer experience.  (Also counts as math elective)

  Criminal, Business and Personal Law…… Grades 10-12

The purpose of this course is to help students become better citizens by empowering them with basic knowledge in the areas of criminal, business and personal law.  Criminal law is introduced through the study  of landmark Supreme Court cases.  Structured to be hands-on, the curriculum is enhanced through supplemental films, research technology, learning and practicing the art of debating, and participating in mock trials.  Business law is approached in a practical manner with connections to real-world situations designed to educate students about their rights as workers and citizens.  The final phase of the course, family law,  explores pre-marital agreements and divorce law.  Throughout the course, students engage in a variety of dynamic projects such as mock trials and crime scene investigations, designed to replicate real life situations and to allow them to draw conclusions regarding the law.

Mock Trial Semester…… Grades 10-12

Mock Trial will introduce students to real-life courtroom procedures.  Students will act out mock trial cases by playing the roles of lawyers and witnesses.  Each case will include a brief summary of relevant law.  this is an excellent course for drama students, students who need to learn the art of debate and public speaking, as well as students who are interested in a law career.  Competition to win a case becomes an important and enjoyable aspect of this course.

Introduction to Marketing ..…. Grades 9-12

This course is designed to provide students with a general understanding of marketing, management, and advertising and the role each plays in the United States and global economies.  Effective communication / interpersonal skills needed to reach a specified target audience will be developed through the exploration of hands-on activities designed to reach each learning style.  Effective sales techniques, visual merchandise displays, market research development, various media strategies uses for promotional purposes will be implemented.

Principles of Business Management, Economics and Investment Semester ….Grades 9 - 12

In this semester course students are introduced to general business principles that they can apply to their everyday lives.  Through hands-on activities, tasks and projects, students will explore the fundamental principles of management and economics.  They will gain an understanding of business financial concepts, which they will use to develop their own investment strategies and also participate in a simulated stock marker investment challenge.

Principles of Personal Finance and Career Management Semester ….Grades 9 - 12

This  semester course builds upon the business knowledge gained in Principles of Business Management, Economics, and Investing and introduces students to personal money management and career planning.  Students will carry out practical, hands-on projects, tasks, and simulations to learn how to obtain and maintain good credit, budget personal expenses, complete tax forms, purchase an automobile and understand the various types of insurance.  Students will participate in a checking account simulation where they will write checks, maintain a check register, and reconcile their bank account.  Students will also develop workplace readiness skills by exploring possible career choices, writing a resume and role-playing simulated interviews.  The use of technology throughout the course will reinforce computer skills.

Computer Applications I - Microsoft Word and Access Semester .....…..Grades 9 - 12  

This course is designed for the moderate to advanced computer user  It is a fast-paced semester course that provides students with the skills they need to efficiently and effectively use Microsoft Word and Access.  Students will learn to use features of MS Word such as advanced formatting, customized toolbars, macros, and other advanced options.  Students will exit this course with the word processing and database skills needed to succeed in high school, college and career.

Computer Applications II  - PowerPoint and Excel Semester .....  Grades 9 - 12  

This course provides students with the skills they need to efficiently and effectively use Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.   Students will learn to use features of PowerPoint ranging from the creation of fundamental presentations to the use of advanced features including sound, animation, automation and Web page creation.  Students will also develop the skills needed to create Excel spreadsheets with formulas and functions, as well as use absolute and relative cell referencing, sort data, apply advanced formatting and link data.  Students will exit this course with the expertise needed to effectively create MS PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets required in high school, college and career.
Prerequisite:  Computer Applications I or Microsoft Word

   Cooperative Marketing Education (C.M.E.).……Grades 11 & 12

 This a cooperative education work experience program.  Students attend school during the morning hours and are assigned to an approved work station for the afternoon session.  Students are paid by the workstation employer at the prevailing minimum wage or greater and are required to complete 540 hours of supervised work experience during their academic year.  The related class helps students reach career goals by offering instruction in business organization and management, human relations skills, and job interviewing strategies and techniques.  Students may be responsible for the operation and management of the school store which is an integral part of the program.  Students earn 15 credits toward their graduation requirement upon successful completion of the course.

   Cooperative Business Education (C.B.E.)……Grades 11 & 12

This work-study course will provide meaningful educational content and experiences for the student.  It will prepare students for threshold employment in the business world.  Students are provided with information concerning working conditions, job selection, and advancement opportunities in the business community.  Students will develop computer skills using Microsoft Office and desktop publishing software.  This course will enable students to evaluate their own skills and abilities, to recognize the place in the business community where these are applicable, and to understand the value of team work between employees and management.
