Plans for the week of
December 18 to 22, 2006
This
week we will view the John Stossel documentary “Greed” and relate
current American consumption to the Depression-era poverty portrayed in
“Of Mice and Men.” You will receive your Progress Report and get graded
papers back to replace in your binder. We will read a short story and
answer some questions. Formal Friday will replace Manners Monday.
Monday – December 18,

Homework:
Tuesday – December 19, 2006- Viewpoint Meeting
Go
over the plans for the week. Receive Progress Reports and have a paper
return. In pairs: Write a 1-2 page dialogue between 2 characters.
Character One is trying to persuade Character Two to put up the first
indoor Christmas tree ever.
Homework:
Think about the documentary “Greed.” Write one paragraph: When it comes
to material things (stuff that costs money)—is it possible for one
person to have too much?
Wednesday – December 20,

Read
the brief biography of Julia Alvarez (Text p. 1076) and “Patently
American Inventions” (Literature and Technology, Text p.1084-1085.)
Begin to read Alvarez’s short story, “Daughter of Invention” (Text p.
1079-1086.)
Homework:
Describe a product that you think would be a smart, successful
invention, and the consumer audience to whom it would appeal. (TWO full
paragraphs.)
(We
can send a man to the moon, but why can’t I have a washer/ dryer
combined in one?)
