................................................Plans for the week of November 13-17, 2006

This week we will finish watching Ron Howard’s Depression Era drama, “Cinderella Man.” We will begin to read the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. We will discuss and write about The American Dream, and poverty in America. (PLEASE participate in MHSN’s program “A Dollar and a Dinner” to contribute a dollar for a holiday dinner for local families in need.)

 

Monday – November 13, 2006- Viewpoint Meeting

Go over the plans for the week. Hand in marking period 1 Extra Credit Sheets. Continue viewing “Cinderella Man.”

Homework: Write 5 sentences to finish the statement “You know you’re poor when…” Take examples from your own life, stories you’ve heard, or the movie.

 

Tuesday – November 14, 2006

Finish viewing “Cinderella Man.” Discuss the evolution of the American Dream. Fill out book cards to receive a copy of Of Mice and Men.

Homework:  Following the format for How to Answer a Short Answer Question hand out, write one paragraph: “What is your American Dream?”

 

Wednesday – November 15, 2006

Begin to read aloud the novel Of Mice and Men

Homework:  Following the format for How to Answer a Short Answer Question hand out, write one paragraph: “What does it mean to live ‘hand to mouth?’” Ask someone or look it up.

 

Thursday – November 16, 2006

Continue to read aloud the novel Of Mice and Men.

Homework: Independently read the excerpt “Boxcar Bill” from Peter Jenning’s book The Century, and highlight the treatment of traveling women and children during the Depression.

 

Friday – November 17, 2006

Fill in page 1 of the Book/Exam Notes for Of Mice and Men. Continue to read aloud the novel Of Mice and Men.
