Re: Summer Reading Guidelines and Novel Choices

Enclosed is the summer reading list for incoming 7th graders. Rather than giving novel choices that introduce them to next year’s themes and topics, we shifted the focus to choosing novels based on the background knowledge they acquired during this past school year. When a child already has the background knowledge needed for reading, they are able to not only understand it more on an independent level, but also make deeper connections to the text. Most of the choices belong in the series to novels they have already studied, or they are books in the same genre. For example, students in 6th grade learned about ancient civilizations and mythology, and a favorite novel among most students was The Lightning Thief. There are three more books to The Lightning Thief series, and all three are choices on the list. Students also explored life during medieval times, and T.A. Baron’s The Lost Years of Merlin series takes place during that time period.

Please note that your child must fill out the reader’s response log as he/she progresses through the book. While all students are required to read one novel this summer, we always encourage reading more than one based on interest and motivation. Our goal was to make the list interesting enough so that there are several options to help foster a love of reading in all students.

Students will be asked by their language arts teacher to hand in their Reader’s Response Logs at the beginning of the new school year.

We offer our sincere wishes for a healthy and happy summer.

Middletown Township Public Schools
Mandatory Summer Reading for Middle School Students

complete the Reader’s Response Logs as they read.

For Students Entering Seventh Grade:

Sequels to The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Sea Of Monsterssome students may have read this in their 6th grade LA classes, but many have not . In this second installment in the series, Percy, Poseidon's 13-year-old demigod son, is desperate to rescue his friend Grover, captive of the bloodthirsty Cyclops Polyphemus, and to retrieve the healing Golden Fleece.
The Titan’s Curse ndash; In this installment, Riordan continues to enliven ancient mythology with wit, contemporary staging, and teenage heroics. Percy Jackson is now 14, a bit older and wiser, yet still entangled with the Fates. Friends, monsters, dysfunctional gods, and the romantic stirrings of all things natural and mythological are encountered.
The Battle of the Labyrinth – Book 4 in the wildly popular series (just released May 6, 2008) Percy Jackson isn't expecting freshman orientation to be any fun, but when a mysterious mortal acquaintance appears, pursued by demon cheerleaders, things quickly go from bad to worse. Time is running out for Percy. War between the gods and the Titans is drawing near. Even Camp Half-Blood isn't safe, as Kronos's army prepares to invade its once impenetrable borders. To stop them, Percy and his friends must set out on a quest through the Labyrinth -- a sprawling underground world with surprises and danger at every turn.

The Lost Years of Merlin Series by T.A. Barron
This engrossing series of T.A. Barron's fascinating contribution to Arthurian lore is the first in a trilogy about Merlin's boyhood and coming of age. From the moment young Merlin is washed ashore on a beach in ancient Wales to his exciting journey to the enchanted land of Fincayra, the action never wavers. It’s an extremely popular choice among middle grade students. The 5 books (listed in order) are: The Lost Years of Merlin, The Seven Songs of Merlin, The Fires of Merlin, The Mirror of Merlin, and The Wings of Merlin.

Chronicles of Narnia Series by C.S. Lewis
Four children travel repeatedly to a world in which they are far more than mere children and everything is far more than it seems. Richly told, populated with fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing of plot, and profoundly allegorical, the story is infused throughout with the timeless issues of good and evil, faith and hope. The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe is in the 6th grade curriculum, so your child may have already read it. The series of books (listed in order) are: The Magician’s Nephew (the prequel), The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and The Last Battle.
