Department Philosophy:

The social studies department has constructed various programs of studies, required and elective, which present the student with a variety of educational experiences. These programs prepare students for active citizenship and further formal education.

Other Highlights:

School-wide programs focusing on broad themes augment the social studies program. Programs promoting tolerance, respect, and moral and ethical development are being presented to all grades. Since 1994, Dr. Leon Bass, An African-American World War II veteran and concentration camp liberation witness, has spoken to the upper grades on various issues that relate to war, racism, genocide, and the greatness of America. These programs are open to the school community and the general public. The social studies department is committed to community-based instruction. Curricular field trips to major museums, historic sites, governmental offices and a variety of other locations enhance the student learning so to build on their classroom instruction.
