THOMPSON PFA MEETING MINUTES

May 18, 2009

 

            The meeting of the Thompson PFA was called to order at 9:25 a.m. Christy Weil, co-president welcomed all.  Granny’s Attic will take place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  This is the 29th year and there will be over 200 crafters.  The money made provides teacher grants and other events for the school.  Granny’s takes months of planning, which begins on the day after the event for the following year.  The packet that will arrive over the summer will contain a membership envelope, safe homes form and a volunteer form.  A volunteer sheet was passed around for various committees.  Board members were introduced.  The PFA email address is thompsonpfa@yahoo.com.  The minutes from the March 16, 2009 meeting were approved.

             Principal:  Mr. Houston welcomed all new 6th grade parents.  Twenty current staff members attended Middletown public schools.  Today is the opportunity for parents to see what the school is about.  The students will also be coming for a tour of the school.  Parents are encouraged to ask questions of staff members while on tour.  Today the Assistant Commissioner of the State Department of Education will also be getting a tour of Thompson.  Parents can check out the Thompson school standardized test scores of the website.  A student handbook will also be in the summer mailing packet.  The band and chorus got the highest rating of superior at the Music in the Parks Festival.  Nine buses with 400 students, parents and staff attended.  The last 4 days of school, June 18-23 will be early dismissal days.  Lunch is served and there is busing.  High school graduation is on Tuesday.  Thompson graduation is on Thursday.  The 8th grade dinner dance takes place at the school.    

             Assistant Principal:  Mr. Baglivio.  Middle school is a big step and kids have to exist on their own.  They need to be responsible for themselves.  Mr. Anderson will be the counsellor for the incoming 6th grade.  Over the summer parents are urged to make sure their students can express their opinion and stand on their own.

             Guidance:  Mr. Anderson has been at Thompson over 20 years.  Was a teacher and a coach and is also in charge of athletics.  High school coaches come in to speak with the 8th graders. 

 Treasurer:  Sue Candio presented the treasurer’s report.  The PFA will buy a sound system for the gym for $4,000.  There will also be a play next year. 

            Vice President:  Denise Caminiti had nothing to report.

                       The High Honor Roll breakfast is tomorrow.  Plans are under way for all 8th grade events.  The Board is remaining the same for next year.  June 25 at 3:30 is graduation.  The 8th grade events all have lower costs this year.  Thank you for voting for the school budget.
