Gifted and Talented Program

Policies and procedures used to identify students as gifted and talented

Our district identifies exceptional learners through a comprehensive, cohesive process to determine eligibility and select students for the gifted and talented program. We use various criteria for identifying and selecting exceptional learners to provide a spectrum of services for identified students, including achievement data, results on the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), parent surveys, and teacher surveys. A minimum qualifying score of 120 is needed on the CogAT in either Grade 2 or Grade 5 to be further considered for the program using additional achievement and survey data.

The parent/guardian of a child who has not been recommended for placement in the K-6 G&T program may contact John Kerrigan, Ed.D (kerriganJ@middletownk12.org), requesting that the recommendation be recalculated based on the CogAT results, parent/teacher surveys, and district achievement data described in the identification process below. All placement decisions are guided by the Board of Education's approved process below.

The parent/guardian of a child who has not been recommended for placement in the middle school honors program or high school honors/Advanced Placement courses but who the parent feels has shown the ability to be successful in the program may contact the child's guidance counselor requesting that the recommendation be considered when further information becomes available. This information includes marking-period grades and standardized test scores that were previously unavailable.

Program Goals

To afford students who are demonstrating academic excellence and characteristics of advanced learners the opportunity to apply foundational skills in the pursuit of individualized learning opportunities that focus on innovative thinking, creativity, and critical thinking.
