Sesame Allergen Information

The official implementation of the FASTER Act on January 1, 2023 raised many questions and concerns for food manufacturers, specifically bread companies, in response to this new regulation. As communicated in May 2022, Whitsons proactively added the 9th allergen of sesame as a call-out in Dine Central. All products that already contained sesame as an ingredient had sesame tagged as a major allergen. At the same time, we also removed sesame oil as an option from our recipes to further reduce the occurrence of this allergen in our meals.

The addition of sesame as a major allergen posed a problem for several bakery manufacturers. Due to certain production and processing procedures, many bakery manufacturers concluded that they could not effectively eliminate the risk of cross-contamination with sesame and/or sesame-based ingredients.

While there are several operational and food safety steps that can be taken to eliminate the risk associated with food cross-contamination, these steps and expenses are at the discretion of the manufacturer to take if they so desire.

At this time, Whitsons partners with Rockland Bakery to supply the District’s bread products, and was informed that the vendor has decided to reformulate its products to contain sesame as an ingredient so that sesame may be claimed as an allergen on its labels.

School Meals and Summer EBT (Free and Reduced Meals)

The Application for School Meals and Summer EBT is used to determine eligibility for not only free meals but also Summer EBT benefits, state funding, and other school benefits such as preschool tuition income eligibility, reduced AP exam fees, etc. We encourage all parents/guardians to complete a new 2024-2025 Application for School Meals and Summer EBT prior to the first day of school

The District now offers MySchoolBucks as a convenient and secure online method to submit payments for your student's meals using a credit/debit card or electronic check.

Registration for MySchoolBucks is free, and by creating a secure account you'll never have to worry again about sending cash or checks with your student(s) to school.

Transaction Fees

A fee of $2.49 will be charged per transaction.

Transactions can be split between multiple student accounts and parents/guardians can deposit up to $120 per student on an account in a single transaction. Since the introduction of the online payment portal in 2012, fees have been chaged with each new processed transaction.

Prior to the 2018-19 school year, the District had absorbed the cost of all transaction fees. With increased use over the last several years, these costs have grown significantly. To maintain reasonable lunch prices, the district no longer has the ability to cover transaction costs.

Cash or Check Still Permitted

While the district offers the online payment portal as a convenience to parents, using the portal is not mandatory. Parents may still use cash or checks to replenish their student's account.
