Health and Physical Education Curriculum

On June 3, 2020, the New Jersey State Board of Education adopted the 2020 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education (NJSLS-CHPE). Due to the COVID-19 Public Emergency, these standards were delayed for full implementation until the upcoming 2022-2023 school year for all students in grades K-12. The NJSLS-CHPE were designed to address the needs of each student in gaining knowledge and skills in caring for themselves, interacting effectively, respectfully and safely with others, and analyzing the impact of health choices.

Our administrative team, educators, and Board of Education have worked diligently over the last two years to produce a curriculum (K-12) and corresponding set of resources that we believe strikes this balance. We request that each family take the time to review, at each applicable grade level, the health units themes, corresponding topics, and curriculum documents.

Gifted and Talented Program

Policies and procedures used to identify students as gifted and talented

Our district identifies exceptional learners through a comprehensive and cohesive process to determine eligibility and selection for the gifted and talented program. We use various criteria for identifying and selecting exceptional learners to provide a spectrum of services for identified students.

The continuum of services offered to gifted and talented students

Recognition of unique talents and needs of every student identified as exceptional
Expansion and development of intellectual skills through provided opportunities
Stimulation of intellectual curiosity as well as independent exploration
Fostering self-motivation, creativity, and continuous learning
Providing advocacy for exceptional learners’ needs in the school community

Program Goals

To afford students that are demonstrating academic excellence and characteristics of advanced learners, the opportunity to apply foundational skills in the pursuit of individualized learning opportunities that focus on innovative thinking, creativity, and critical thinking.

Grade Level Eligibility

Students in Grades K-6 are eligible for participation in the program.
Students in Grades 7-12 are afforded extended opportunities through participation in advanced placement and/ or honors level courses and instructional differentiation within the regular classroom setting.

Complaint Policy

The parent/guardian of a child who has not been recommended for placement in the K-6 G&T program but who the parent feels has shown the ability to be successful in the program, may contact John Kerrigan, Ed.D (kerriganJ@middletownk12.org), requesting that the recommendation be considered when further information becomes available. This information includes benchmark assessment data and standardized test scores that were not available previously.
The parent/guardian of a child who has not been recommended for placement in the middle school honors program or high school honors/Advanced Placement courses but who the parent feels has shown the ability to be successful in the program, may contact the child's guidance counselor requesting that the recommendation be considered when further information becomes available. This information includes marking period grades and standardized test scores that were not available previously.

Summer Learning Opportunities

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, family and friends! It is also a time when you can continue your learning while hanging in your backyard, lying on the beach, or on your family vacation. I hope you join in the fun and learn something new this summer. Check out the many resources posted on the MTPS Summer Learning website during the months of July and August to explore new things or revisit something you learned this year, or register for one of the many programs being offered to extend your learning.
