MTPS Honored at 2019 NJSBA Workshop for Future Ready Silver District Distinction

The MTPS Administrative Team and Board Members hold up a Future Ready Silver District Distinction banner at NJSBA Workshop. Educators across the District are engaging students in personalized learning opportunities that build the skills necessary to one day flourish during college studies, a trade school education or in a rapidly evolving global work environment.

This forward-thinking approach to education is the mission of Future Ready Schools New Jersey (FRS-NJ), an organization dedicated to establishing a culture of innovation and empowerment in our schools. FRS-NJ is a coalition of the New Jersey School Boards Association, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the New Jersey Department of Education.

The coalition recognized the District for its Future Ready efforts on September 16th, and honored our schools with a ceremony at the 2019 New Jersey School Boards Association Workshop in October.

In a Monday morning announcement, Middletown Township Public Schools was one of only four districts in the state to earn Future Ready Schools New Jersey’s inaugural Silver District Distinction. This distinction acknowledges Middletown’s commitment to authentic learning and its willingness to share best practices with colleagues from all over the state.

“This distinction truly acknowledges the work of our teachers and administrators from each of our 17 schools who support our District’s personalized learning goal through their day-to-day practice,” said Superintendent of Schools, William O. George III, Ed. D.

FRS-NJ provides school districts with an evidence-based framework by which to successfully implement personalized learning supported by effective technology integration. Each year, schools submit evidence in the three themes; Leadership, Education and Classroom Practice, and Technology Support and Services. Evidence is evaluated by peers from dozens of school districts. This process leads to deeper reflection and improved educational practices.

Middletown’s collaboration with other future ready districts has resulted in the successful establishment of “Learning Design Teams” in each of our 17 schools. These teams of administrators and teacher leaders have been charged with facilitating our district goals, such as the application of data-driven practices inside the classroom, and the implementation of personalized learning programs that connect education to the passions of our students and faculty.

The principles we have instituted now serve as the model by which our peers are formulating their own educational philosophies. Middletown’s exemplar evidence and mentorship have helped guide other districts in beginning the FRS-NJ certification process. More than 260 schools in 72 New Jersey districts have followed our lead in future ready preparedness.

According to Wendy Morales, District Supervisor of Social Studies and Technology, K-12, this Silver District Distinction validates the blueprint Middletown Township Public Schools is creating.

"Future Ready Schools NJ requires us to continually reflect and improve upon our own practices as educators. It sets rigorous standards by which we can evaluate ourselves and our peers. This process has led to meaningful collaborations and new ideas. I feel so lucky to be in a district that inspires others, yet is always seeking ways to improve learning for our students" said Morales.

The Silver District Distinction certification could not have been achieved without the efforts of over 20 teacher leaders and Educational Technology Specialists who voluntarily served on the Awards Committee over the summer. The support of the Middletown Township Board of Education and our district community has also been essential to the district’s success in this process.
